Checking emails in Gmail via POP3 will no longer work

Since Gmail’s early days, users could configure the platform to “fetch” emails from other servers using the POP3 protocol. This turned Gmail into a convenient web-based hub that centralized all of a person’s email identities. However, Google’s support documentation now states that “fetching emails from third-party accounts into your Gmail account, via POP, will no longer be supported.” (via »)

What does this mean? If you check external email addresses in Gmail, this will no longer work.

The solution?

#1 Desktop email clients such as Thunderbird or Microsoft Outlook.

#2 (Premium) email applications such as Zoho Mail.

#3 Google Workspace — the paid version of Gmail/Google services.

But if until now you checked your emails in Gmail via POP3, this is no longer possible.

Post Office Protocol Version 3 (POP3) is an alternative protocol for receiving emails that downloads emails from the server to a local device. Using POP3, a recipient cannot access their emails again from a different device because they are stored locally and then deleted from the email server. (via »)

The alternative – IMAP – takes up storage space.

I’m writing about this situation because email data is a type of data that can be saved.
